GE welcomes double success with projects for the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition

  • GE and its partners secure two innovation project awards aimed at helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime sector through cleaner fuels and energy efficiency measures.
  • GE Power Conversion will use its capabilities in maritime electrification, energy management and digital technologies.
  • One project focuses on fuel cell system integration into a large ship’s power architecture with partners Ceres Power Ltd, Lloyd’s Register and MSC Cruise Management (UK) Ltd.
  • The second project involves development of a cloud-based, integrated digital solution for energy management at ports with partners PD Teesport Ltd, Connected Places Catapult and Teesside University.

GE Power Conversion welcomes a double project award which will further its innovation roadmap to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions in maritime sector applications.

The two projects are part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition, funded by the UK Government’s Department for Transport, and by industry, and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK.

One project focuses on fuel cell system integration into a large ship’s power architecture and energy management system with partners Ceres Power Ltd, Lloyd’s Register and MSC Cruise Management (UK) Ltd.

The second project involves development of a cloud-based, integrated digital solution for energy management at ports with partners PD Teesport Ltd, Connected Places Catapult and Teesside University.

To reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in line with IMO regulatory net zero milestones towards 2050 requires step changes in technologies and fuels. GE Power Conversion’s Managing Director in the UK, Andy Cooper explains: “Industry is investing in ‘clean ship’ and ‘clean port’ technology readiness, but we also have to consider customers’ operational needs, feasibility of integration and commercial viability of new technology. Without this parallel development of ‘systems readiness’, adoption of cleaner technology may be slower and higher risk. We welcome the opportunity to work with our partners on real integration scenarios”.

The Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition is a £20m investment from government alongside a further c.£10m from industry to reduce emissions from the maritime sector.  Announced in March 2020, and part of the Ten Point Plan to position the UK at the forefront of green shipbuilding and maritime technology, the programme is supporting 55 projects across the UK. As set out in the Clean Maritime Plan (2019), Government funding has been used to support early-stage research relating to clean maritime. The programme will be used to support the research, design, and development of zero emission technology and infrastructure solutions for maritime and to accelerate decarbonisation in the sector.

Simon Edmonds, Deputy Executive Chair and Chief Business Officer for Innovate UK, said: “As the UK prepares to host COP26 in the maritime city of Glasgow, it is great that we can announce funding for these fantastic projects in the maritime sector that will help the UK meet its net zero goals.”
