Tag Browser
About the Tag Browser
The Tag Browser allows you to find tags, view tag information, and plot tags.
The Tag Browser loads the in-context asset and its associated tags by default. You can add additional assets and their associated tags to the Tag Browser.
You can plot SmartSignal Model groups and tags from the Tag Browser.
- The asset currently in context.
- The asset attributes associated with the selected asset. Listed asset attributes are restricted to Reference attributes only.
- The tag expressions associated with the selected asset.
- The plotted tags for the selected view.
- The tag groups associated with the asset.
- The tag groups that have been deployed.
- The SmartSignal analytics provide Modes and Models for both active and inactive tags.
- The non-SmartSignal analytics provide Input Tags and Output Tags.
- When you hover over the Analytic name, the Analytic deployment name appears.
You cannot add additional assets for Event Data Analysis charts in the Tag Browser, Tag Expressions, or Search Browser panes.
The Tag Browser and Plotted Tags appear in the Tag Panel for both SmartSignal and Analysis cards. The Asset node in the Tag Browser expands to display the All Tags node, the Analytics node, and the Tag Expressions node. Child-Asset nodes are expandable. The Tag Expressions node can be expanded to reveal the relevant tag expressions for the asset context. To view the tag details in a tool tip, hover over a tag in the Tag Browser or in Plotted Tags. The Analytics node expands to display model groups, which also expand to display groups of tags that can be plotted. Tool tips are not available for nodes.
When you use search in the Tag Browser, tags within the selected assets are highlighted as you enter characters.
When you select a view, any tags that are currently plotted in the view appear in Plotted Tags.
- Plot tags, analytics groups and tags, and tag expressions to the charts for the selected view.
- Globally mute or unmute tags that appear on the charts for the selected view.
- Access tag information.
- Add and remove multiple assets and their associated tags.
- Search the Tag Browser by tag name or description.
- View tag groups associated with the asset in the tag tree. Note: The Analytic tag groups appear in the order of their ordinal numbers in the Analytic Groups section of the Tag Browser, when the tag groups are assigned ordinal numbers in the Analytics template. However, if the Analytic tag groups do not have any ordinal numbers assigned in the Analytics template they appear in the alphabetical order in the Tag Browser.
In Analysis charts, you can drag up to 40 tags to a Time Series, Spiderweb, or Parallel Axis chart in the view singly or in groups. The X-Y and Polar charts are limited to two or three tags per chart, respectively. Double-clicking the heading of Plotted Tags collapses it. You may need to scroll to see all items in a long list of tags in the Tag Browser.
In SmartSignal charts, you can drag up to 40 tags to a Time Series chart in the view singly or in groups. If you add a group with more than 40 tags, the remaining tags are added to a new card automatically.
Removing an asset from the tree does not affect tags already plotted; however, tag expressions listed in the tree may become invalid. The primary asset cannot be removed.

Plot Tags for Time Series Analysis Charts
Tags and child tags can be plotted on an Alert Analysis or Time Series Analysis chart.
About This Task
The default ad hoc analysis chart has no tags plotted, so you must search for tags and plot them manually. Analysis charts may utilize pre-defined analysis templates, which can be accessed in the View Selector. Alert analysis charts contain pre-plotted tags that depend on the analysis template, which is part of the alert template associated with the alert. You can modify the charts by dragging and dropping additional tags on a chart.
When plotting a tag, the source UoM is converted to the standard UoM during plotting.
Each plotted tag has a unique color identifier, and the data for that tag is plotted on the chart using the same color. Plotted tags with no data or tags that are not configured have no color assigned.
- On the asset tags list, plotted tag list, or search results list to an existing chart.
- On the asset tags list, plotted tag list, or search results list to a new chart.
- You can select multiple tags from the asset tags list, plotted tag list, or search results by using the Shift key or the Control key on the keyboard. Note: This is limited to 40 tags.
The Tag Browser section of the Tag Tree Browser is made up of parent nodes, such as assets or tag expressions. These parent nodes expand to reveal tags. The Plotted Tag section is made up of tags. In some cases, a tag node can be expanded to reveal child tags, which can also be plotted to charts.
Procedure
- To plot tags or tag expressions in the Tag Browser or Plotted Tags list to an existing chart:
- To plot tags or tag expressions in the Search list in the Tag Tree Browser to an existing chart:
Plot Tags for Event Data Analysis Charts
Tags and child tags can be plotted on an event-based ad hoc analysis chart.
About This Task
The data for an event appears on the Event Data Analysis chart. You can display data for up to forty prior events of the type selected on your chart. The Event Data Analysis view uses a selected number of events prior to a date and time selected by you to determine the time range to display for the selected event. You can also select the number of seconds pre- and post-event for the amount of data surrounding the selected event. Once you have plotted tags to a chart, an Event Frames list appears in the Tag Tree Browser that contains the number of events selected.
When plotting a tag, the source UOM is converted to the standard UoM during plotting.
Procedure
- To plot tags or tag expressions in the Tag Browser list to an existing chart:
- To plot tags or tag expressions in the Search list in the Tag Tree Browser to an existing chart:
Plot SmartSignal Model Group Tags
You can select a SmartSignal model group within an analytic, and plot all the associated tags to a SmartSignal card.
About This Task
Plotting multiple tags to a SmartSignal card displays a separate chart for each associated tag. Only SmartSignal tags can be plotted to a SmartSignal card.
If the number of tags in the model group exceeds 40, a new card is automatically added and the remaining tags are plotted on the new card.
Procedure
Plot a Reference Curve
You can compare actual data points on an X-Y chart with a plotted power curve to assess performance.
About This Task
You can plot a reference curve along with the actual data in the asset to see how much the data is deviating in the reference curve. This could indicate an under-performing asset due to configuration, or a degradation of the asset.
You can add a reference curve tag to an X-Y chart as part of a tag series.
All tags can be filtered, including reference curves. You cannot drag and drop a tag series in the Plotted Tags section. Additional tag series plotted to the chart must match UoMs to the tag series already plotted.
Removing tags that exist on multiple charts in a view affects all the charts in the view.
You must plot tags associated with a power curve, as the system does not validate your tag type.
Procedure
Plot Tags in a Tabular Format
About This Task
You can display data of a query in tabular format.
Procedure
Display All Generated Alerts for a SmartSignal Asset
You can display one or more Alerts for an asset or group of assets along with the contributing and non-contributing tags associated with the generated Alerts from the Tag Browser.
About This Task
The contributing and non-contributing tags for each asset from a generated Alert will be grouped in a node in the Tag Browser.
When you select an Alert in the Alerts module it navigates to Analysis and plots the tags for the selected Alert. Assets may include additional generated Alerts that appear in the Tag Browser. The Tag Browser will show all the ready or an in-progress tags from generated Alerts for all the assets that the Alerts are associated with.
Contributing and non-contributing tags associated with generated Alerts appear within the Tag Browser. When alerts occur, the affected Analytic name, Analytic Tag, mode, model, group, or tag icons become red. Any parent node in the Tag Browser that is related to the affected tag also becomes red.
The Alerts are listed in order of severity and have both contributing tags (tags that directly contribute to the Alert) and non-contributing tags (tags that are a part of the asset but are not contributing to the Alert).
The Alert icon for the associated tag includes a severity number and a color generated by the Alert. See Alert Severity and Status. When dates within the date range are changed, the generated severity Alerts available on the highlighted SmartSignal chart may change.
You can save the updated chart as evidence and view the information in the chart from the time the evidence was saved.Procedure
Display On Monitor Tags for SmartSignal
You can display the On Monitor tags you have designated for SmartSignal.
About This Task
If a tag stops providing good data, you can turn it off in the asset model. If you designate the tag as On Monitor, it continues to collect data that is available in the Tag Browser.
Procedure
Display the Tag Values in Scientific Notation
You can toggle between standard and scientific notation for Y-axis tag values on a chart.
About This Task
Selecting scientific notation for tag values on a chart in a view allows you to view very large tag values on the Y-axis. Once selected, you can save the options for the chart as a part of the template.
Procedure
Remove a Tag
You can remove a tag from all the charts in the view.
About This Task
The view's card names, chart names, and tag names for tags that are plotted on a chart in the view appear on the Plotted Tags section. Plotted tags are displayed in the Plotted Tags section as single tags or tag series. The X-Y chart and the Polar chart display tag series. Tags that are displayed as tag series in the Plotted Tags list can be removed as a tag series.
Removing tags that exist on multiple charts in a view affects all the charts in the view.
Procedure
- To remove single tags in the Plotted Tags list:
- To remove a tag series in the Plotted Tags list:
- To remove a tag while building a tag series:
Add and Remove Y-Axes on a Chart
About This Task
When you are plotting tags on a time series chart, then you can select for all the tags on the same Y-axis to appear. Or, select to automatically group the tags based on UoM on multiple axis. By default, the time series chart will plot all the tags on the single axis.
If only one tag series is plotted, the tag name appears on the Y-axis. Tag series are created when two tags are plotted for an X-Y or Polar chart.
You can turn on or turn off multiple-Y-axes on the time series chart.
Tags dropped onto a chart that have different units of measure create a new y-axis. You can add up to six Y-axes to a chart. Y-axes appear three to the left of the chart, then three to the right of the chart. The unit of measure and the tag colors associated with that Y-axis appear for each Y-axis.
Tags dropped onto a chart with a corresponding unit of measure are added to that y-axis. All tags are added to the Chart Register.
If you select a card layout other than one-up, multi-Y-axes functionality is not available. All tags will plot to one Y-axis.
Procedure
- To add a Y-axis to a chart:
- To remove multiple Y-axes from a chart:
- In the module navigation menu, select .
- Use the Context Browser to select an asset context.
- In the View Selector, select a Public Templates or My Templates view.
- Select , and unselect Show Multiple Y Axes option.
- Select Apply.
Add and Remove Multiple Assets
You can add assets for analysis within the hierarchy so that you can compare time series data for multiple assets on a chart.
About This Task
You can add any asset to analysis that you have access to, enabling you to plot tags in the selected assets on the charts. This allows you to look at multiple assets to investigate or isolate an issue.
The Tag Browser and Plotted Tags sections appear in the Tag Tree Browser. The Tag Browser section lists primary and secondary assets. The primary asset is selected in the Context Browser. While you can delete secondary assets in the view, you cannot delete the primary asset.
You cannot add additional assets for Event Data Analysis charts in the Tag Tree Browser, Tag Expressions, or Search Browser panes.
You can plot tags for multiple selected assets simultaneously. Assets with tag expressions plotted cannot be removed.
You can drag any tag associated with a listed asset to a chart, or remove the tag from its associated charts.
Procedure
- To add secondary assets to a chart:
- To remove a secondary asset and its associated tags:
Compare Multiple Assets
You can compare similar tags for selected assets on a plotted chart.
About This Task
Comparing similar tags for assets adds the assets to the tag browser and updates the charts with the plotted tags.
- If you select an existing asset in the context browser, the "Asset already exists in the tree view" message appears.
- If similar tags are not available for any of the selected assets, the "Matching tags are not found for some assets" message appears.
- If tag expressions contain multiple assets, the "Comparing tag expression with multiple assets are not supported" message appears.
Procedure
Modify a Tag Series Name
You can modify a tag series name on a chart.
About This Task
Procedure
Focus on a Tag Series in a Chart
You can focus on a particular tag series when you have multiple series plotted to a chart.
About This Task
X-Y and Polar charts allow you to plot multiple tag series on a chart. You can focus on a specific tag series on the chart by bringing it to the front. Muted tags are unmuted when they appear.
Templates containing multiple tag series do not save the order in which the series appear.
When you have multiple series plotted on a chart , sometimes the tags overlap on each other and the last one that was plotted is the one that is visible on the chart. In order to look at the other series that are not visible , the user can bring that series to the front so that they can view that series on top.
Procedure
Mute the Chart Data
You can mute tags, tag series, or tag expressions plotted on a chart to change the data.
About This Task
The Plotted Tag section in the Tag Tree Browser displays a hierarchy of the card names for the view, chart names, and tag names for tags that are plotted on a chart in the view. Tags displayed in the Plotted Tag list can be individually muted. X-Y charts and Polar charts display plotted tags as a tag series, which can be muted.
A single color from a palette of sixteen is applied to a plotted tag and its data in a specific order. Once muted, these items retain their color for later use.
Procedure
Unmute the Chart Data
You can unmute previously muted plotted tags, tag series, or tag expressions.
About This Task
Procedure
Search the Tag Tree Browser
Use Search on the Tag Tree Browser to find assets and tags existing in the plotted tags and tree hierarchy.
About This Task
You can search assets, asset attributes, and tags that are appearing in the Tag Tree Browser and Plotted Tags lists.
Procedure
Export Tags from a Tabular Format
About This Task
You can export the tabular data to a .CSV file.
