Classifications Overview
About Asset and Tag Classifications
A classification is collection of asset or tag instances with common characteristics.
A classification is a modeling construct that allows a data modeler to design an asset model by identifying the common characteristics of assets or tags.
For example, suppose you have a product line of bicycles: two-wheeled, three-wheeled, and four-wheeled. The common characteristic (or attribute) for each model in the line is number of wheels. A data modeler would add this attribute to the root asset classification when the asset instances are created they will inherit the custom attribute for number of wheels. If there are additional common attributes for bicycles these can be added at the root asset classification as well.
Classifications are added to GE Digital APM during ingestion by anyone with modify asset privileges.
You can access classifications by selecting a link in an associated instance, or by searching criteria in Classifications.
Create a Classification
You can create new root-classifications or child-classifications for each level in the business functional hierarchy. You can create new root-tag classifications or child-tag classifications.
About This Task
Beginning from here | You can create this type of classification |
---|---|
Enterprise | You can create a root-Enterprise or a child-Enterprise. |
Site | You can create a root-Site or a child-Site. |
Segment | You can create a root-Segment or a child-Segment. |
Asset | You can create root-Asset or a child-Asset. |
Tag | You can create a root-Tag or a child-Tag. |
Field | Description |
---|---|
Classification Name | The name of the new classification. |
(Optional) Description | A description of the new classification. |
Source ID | A unique identifier for the new classification. Note: You can assign same source ID to different types of classification such as Enterprise, Site, Segment, Asset, and Tag in different cases. For example: TurbineSiteType (SiteType), turbinesitetype (AssetType), Turbinesitetype (TagType) |
(Optional) Position in Hierarchy check box | Creates the new classification at the root level in the hierarchy. You can select any Type as the root. This disables the Parent Classification box. |
Type | Specifies the type of classification (Enterprise, Site, Segment, Asset, or Tag). |
Parent Classification | Allows you to define the association in which the new classification is created as a child-classification. Selecting the Parent Classification drop-down list box allows you to select from the choices available. The Parent Classification is based on the Type selected. During creation of child-classifications, the Parent Classification created last displays by default. Otherwise, the first classification in the drop-down list box is displayed. If the Asset or Tag Type is selected as a classification type, you can search for a classification. |
Procedure
Create a Child-Classification
You can create child-classifications for each level in the business functional hierarchy. You can create new root-tag classifications or child-tag classifications.
About This Task
You can create child-classification of any type in the business functional hierarchy. The child-classification inherits all the attributes from the root-classification. The datatype defined for the attributes in the root-classification remains same and cannot be changed. However, you can add or delete custom attributes. The instances also inherit attributes from the Classification or Type under which they have been created.
For example, if an attribute Rotor Diameter within Turbine Classification is defined as integer datatype, then all the instances of the Turbine populating value for the attribute Rotor Diameter must provide integer as datatype and values must comply to the datatype.
Procedure
Find and Select a Parent Classification
You can search for a specific Asset or Tag classification to use as a parent classification.

Procedure
Add Members to a Classification Group
You can add member objects to an existing classification group.
About This Task
You can select classification member objects and specify an existing group for which to add the selected members.
Procedure
Access Classifications Via Search
You can access a classification by selecting a classification type and applying modifiers in the Classifications page. You can also access a specific classification from an instance or group.
About This Task
You can use the Classification Type drop-down list box to select an option to display a list of all classifications of that type. Additionally, you can further narrow your search for classifications by using the modifiers during your search.
- All Classifications
- Business Functional Hierarchy Classifications
- Asset Classifications
- Tag Classifications
Once the list of classifications in the Classification results table appears, you can navigate to a specific classification or parent classification by selecting the appropriate link.
When you enter search criteria, the first 250 matching entries for any column in the Classifications table display in the Search Results. Use modifiers to construct queries, narrowing your search.
- Classification Name
- Source ID
- Parent Class
- Classification Type
- Description
Use three or more characters in your search text to avoid time-outs. You can use multiple modifiers when searching. When you perform the search with multiple query options or fewer search characters, you search scope is widened, leading to slower result retrieval.
Procedure
Modify a Classification Name
You can modify a classification name.
About This Task
Once you have selected a classification in the Classifications results table, you can modify the name. The new name for the asset or tag classification is propagated throughout GE Digital APM.
Procedure
Modify a Classification Description
You can modify a classification description.
About This Task
Once you have selected a classification in the Classifications results table, you can modify the description. The new description for the classification is propagated throughout GE Digital APM.
Procedure
Delete a Classification for a Business Functional Object
You can delete a business functional object classification from GE Digital APM.
About This Task
A business functional object refers to the Enterprise, Site, and Segment locations within the business functional hierarchy.
- Deleting a classification cannot be undone.
- You must delete any associated child-classifications and asset or tag instances before you can delete a business functional object classification.
Procedure
Delete an Asset or Tag Classification
You can delete an asset or tag classification from GE Digital APM.
About This Task
- Deleting a classification cannot be undone.
- You must delete any associated child-classifications and asset instances before you can delete an asset classification.
- You must delete any associated tag instances before you can delete a tag classification.
