Taxonomy Configuration
About Taxonomy Configuration
Using the equipment taxonomy assigned to your existing assets, Taxonomy Configuration in Inspection Management allows you to associate relevant Inspection Families and Checklist Templates with your assets. When creating inspections by asset, users will only see inspection types that are relevant to the asset.
Classification
In GE Digital APM, taxonomy refers to the classification systems used for identifying equipment. Equipment taxonomy is broken down into three sections:
- Taxonomy Category: A list of equipment categories (e.g., Electrical is a category of equipment).
- Taxonomy Class: A list of types of equipment classifications (e.g., Capacitor is a class of electrical equipment).
-
Taxonomy Type: A list of types of equipment (e.g., Series Capacitor is a type of capacitor).
Taxonomy Category is the broadest level of classification and contains categories under which certain assets may fit. After selecting a Taxonomy Category, you can select a relevant Taxonomy Class to further specify the class of the assets by which you want to filter. Taxonomy Types are the most specific classification and contain types of assets within the class you selected. This classification applies to both equipment taxonomy and Taxonomy Configuration in Inspection Management.
Using Taxonomy Configuration
In the Taxonomy Configuration workspace, you can link Inspection Families or Checklist Templates to Taxonomy Configurations that you have created. By linking Taxonomy Configurations, these Checklist Templates and Inspection Families become available to users when they create inspections for assets that have the same equipment taxonomy. Inspections or checklists associated with different Taxonomy Categories, Classes, or Types are excluded from the list of available inspections and checklists.
Taxonomy Configurations should contain items that correspond to the chosen Taxonomy Categories, Classes, or Types. For example, a Taxonomy Configuration with Fixed Asset as the Taxonomy Category could be linked to a Checklist Template that includes a Checklist Category such as Boiler with items pertaining to boilers. When users try to create an inspection for an asset that has been defined as fixed in its equipment taxonomy, the Checklist Templates linked to the Taxonomy Configuration that has Taxonomy Category defined as Fixed Asset appear.
Example: Taxonomy Configuration Filtering
The following assets share the same equipment taxonomy as the defined Taxonomy Configurations:
Asset ID | Taxonomy Category | Taxonomy Class | Taxonomy Type |
Equip-000 | Fixed | Boiler | Misc Boiler |
Equip-001 | Fixed | Boiler | None |
Equip-002 | Electrical | Capacitor | Series Capacitor |
The following table displays Inspection Families and Checklist Templates that are linked to the defined Taxonomy Configurations:
Taxonomy Category | Taxonomy Class | Taxonomy Type | Inspection Family | Checklist Template |
Fixed | Boiler | Misc Boiler | Full Inspection | Fire Tube Boilers Inspection Checklist |
Fixed | Boiler | None | General Inspection | Boiler Inspection Checklist |
- For asset Equip-000, the user would see inspection types Full Inspection, General Inspection, Boiler Inspection Checklist, and Fire Tube Boilers Inspection Checklist due to the equipment taxonomy definition matching on both Taxonomy Configurations. All other inspection types would be filtered out.
- For asset Equip-001, the user would see inspection types General Inspection and Boiler Inspection Checklist due to the equipment taxonomy definition matching on the first Taxonomy Configuration but not the second. All other inspection types would be filtered out.
-
For asset Equip-002, the user would see a full, unfiltered list of inspection types because it does not match on any Taxonomy Configuration.
