About Catalog Folder Properties

Only Super Users and members of the MI Catalog Administrator Security Group can view and modify folder properties. Each Catalog folder has the following properties, which are displayed on the Catalog Folder Properties window, in the General section:

  • Name : The name of the folder.
  • Description : A brief description of the folder.

Note: You cannot modify the name and description of root-level folders (i.e., Personal, Public, and Baseline).
  • Last Updated By : The name of the user who last modified the folder.
  • Last Updated On : The date the folder was last modified.

A list of users and groups with permissions to a given Catalog folder is displayed on the associated Catalog Folder Properties window, in the Permissions section.

About Public Folder Permissions

Security permissions for the Public folder and its subfolders determine who has the ability to view and modify those folders and their contents. The grid within the Permissions section shows which Security Users and Security Groups already have permissions to a given Public folder.

Note: Only Super Users, members of the MI Catalog Administrator Security Group, and members of the MI Power User Role Security Group can see the Permissions section on the Catalog Folder Properties window, and, therefore, manage permissions to the Public folder and subfolders.

Automatic Public Folder Permissions

All members of the Everyone Security Group have View permissions for the //Public/Meridium folder and its subfolders.

Super Users, members of the MI Catalog Administrator Security Group, or Members of the MI Power User Role Security Group have full permissions to Public folders.

Note: Inherent View permissions and permissions for Super Users, members of the MI Catalog Administrator Security Group, or Members of the MI Power User Role Security Group are not displayed in the Permissions section on the Catalog Folder Properties window because permissions are implied for those users.

Public folder permissions can be set at any level and, optionally, spread to the subfolders that exist within that folder using the Spread function. Permissions that have been spread from a higher-level folder will not appear in the grid in the Permissions section when you access the Catalog Folder Properties window from a subfolder.

Other Permissions

Besides the automatic Public folder permissions, all other Public Catalog folder permissions must be granted explicitly to Security Users and Security Groups. The following list explains the available permissions:

  • Create: Allows a Security User or Security Group create items in the folder.

Note: Granting Create permissions will allow a Security User or Security Group to create only Catalog items, not Catalog folders. Only Super Users or members of the MI Catalog Administrator Security Group can create subfolders within the Public folder.
  • View: Allows a Security User or Security Group view or open items within the folder.
  • Edit: Determines a Security User or Security Group's ability to modify item properties within a given folder. The following options are available for this permission level:
    • None: Restricts a Security User or Security Group from modifying any items within the folder.
    • Own: Allows a Security User or Security Group modify only the items they own.
Tip: By default, the Security User who first saved a Catalog item owns it. Ownership can be transferred to another user after the item is saved.
    • All: Allows a Security User or Security Group modify all items within the folder, regardless of ownership.
  • Delete: Determines a Security User or Security Group's ability to delete items within a given folder. The following options are available for this permission level:
    • None: Restricts a Security User or Security Group from deleting any items within the folder.
    • Own: Lets a Security User or Security Group delete only the items they own.
    • All: Allows a Security User or Security Group delete all items within the folder, regardless of ownership.

Permissions can be modified in the Permissions section on the Catalog Folder Properties window. For each permission type, the Spread check box is available. Selecting this check box will cause the selected permissions to be inherited by all subfolders of the current folder.

About Catalog Items

Catalog items are objects that are stored in the APM database. APM supports the following Catalog item types:

  • Dashboard
  • DataLoaderTemplate
  • Dataset
  • Graph
  • Metric Views
  • Projects
  • Queries
  • Report
  • RScript

    Rule Projects

Note: Only administrator users can see Rule Projects.
  • Script
  • Search

When you select a folder in the Catalog folder hierarchy, the Catalog items that are stored in that folder appear in the grid within the workspace.

Each Catalog item has the following properties:

  • Name : The name of the item. Catalog item names are required, must be unique within a given folder. Catalog item names should not contain the following characters:
    • % (percent sign) followed by two hexadecimal digits (0-9, a-f)
    • [] (square brackets)

Note: This rule applies to queries only.

If you create a Catalog item that contains any of these characters and then create a hyperlink to that item, an error message will appear when you try to open the item using the link.

  • Caption : The translatable value that is used to identify the Catalog item in most places throughout APM. If a translation exists for the Culture associated with your Security User account, you will see that translation when you view the item in the Catalog.
  • Description : A brief description of the item.
  • Type : The item type.
  • Last Update By : The name of the user who last modified the item.
  • Last Update Date : The date the item was last modified.
  • Created By : The name of the user who created the item.
  • Created Date : The date on which the item was created.
  • Owner : The name of the user who first saved the item.
