How do I browse an OPC server?

The Browse OPC Server dialog box provides a graphical means of configuring the OPC Client. Instead of you having to remember or refer to notes to determine what data is available in the OPC server, you can display a tree browser and select the data you require.

 To browse an OPC Server:

  1. In the Tree Browser, select the item you want to obtain an item ID or access path for.
  2. Click Browse Server. The Browse OPC Server (Datablock Browser) dialog box appears. If a message box appears instead, then an error has occurred or the OPC server does not support browsing.
  3. From the Item IDs list, select the item ID you want to use. Use the plus and minus buttons to expand and collapse the tree.
  4. If necessary, edit the text in the ItemID and Access Path boxes to match what you need. Some servers return hints that need to be edited.
  5. From the Access Paths list, select the access path. Use the plus and minus buttons to expand and collapse the tree.
  6. Click OK. The item ID and access path you select are displayed in the correct fields in the Properties Viewer.

NOTE: Not all OPC servers support browsing. Contact your OPC server’s software vendor or refer to your OPC server documentation to determine if your server supports this feature.
