As we head into electricity’s expansive golden age, our knowledge base requires a similar specialized collection: intelligence and fine detail on global power systems.

April 2 marks the one-year anniversary of GE Vernova, a purpose-built innovation company dedicated to electrifying and decarbonizing the world’s energy system. Drawing on more than 130 years of experience tackling the world’s energy challenges, the company’s installed base produces about 25% of the world’s electricity, from wind and hydropower to gas-powered and grid solutions. The company built a solid foundation for a strong and sustainable future in its first year. Teesside, the urban region perched on the muddy banks of the River Tees in northeast England, used to be a global beacon of industry. In the mid-19th century, the port of Middlesbrough forged its reputation as “Ironopolis,” boasting nearly 100 blast furnaces that roared away round the clock. The town was also a major chemicals hub, drawing on the rock salt deposits at the mouth of the chilly North Sea to produce alkalis, fertilizers, and plastics.

When we look back on what catalyzed the hydrogen economy, we might say it all began in a small, historic steelmaking town in the state of South Australia. Here in Whyalla, at the top of the Spencer Gulf, north of Adelaide, ground will soon be broken for the construction of what is expected to be the world’s largest green hydrogen plant.

With net zero deadlines inching closer, the United Kingdom is in a race to ensure it has the capacity to generate enough electricity to keep the lights on throughout the country — while meeting its own legally binding mandates for carbon reductions.
