As the global energy transition accelerates, maintaining the long-term stamina of critical infrastructure like wind turbines requires being able to spot hidden risks before they can become failures. Proactively protecting these systems means uninterrupted energy for neighborhoods, smarter and safer environments for inspectors, and lower operational costs.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration determined that 2024, which witnessed a raft of Category 5 hurricanes, was the worst year in a decade for U.S. power outages. The spike meant that the average utility customer was without power for 11 hours in 2024, nearly double the average of the preceding 10 years. Beyond the storms, worsening trends in wildfires and floods are raising costs for utilities, placing pressure on household budgets. 

Roger Martella, GE Vernova’s chief corporate officer and chief sustainability officer, used to tell the story of the company by starting in the past. He felt the weight of history as he made his way to work each morning, remembering how Thomas Edison built the world’s first commercial power plant on Pearl Street in Manhattan, a small coal-fired station that powered more than 10,000 incandescent lamps, before founding the General Electric Company in 1892. 

Fifteen years ago, the world’s power grids were starting to change fast. As coal plants retired and renewables expanded, power systems needed technology that could deliver both flexibility and scale. GE Vernova’s H-class gas turbine was built for that moment, and its record-breaking combined-cycle efficiency helped make it the fastest-growing fleet in its class.

As India grows, so does the need to deliver reliable, affordable electricity to the people and businesses that depend on it every day. Gujarat, one of the country’s sunniest regions, is an ideal place to generate large-scale solar power.

With demand for electricity rising fast, expanding access to power while reducing emissions is becoming more urgent. Getting there will require new systems, new ways of working, and, most importantly, people who can bring it all together.

On April 22, as the world marked Earth Day, 15 GE Vernova employees gathered at the New York Stock Exchange to ring the opening bell. They represented thousands working across regions, roles, and technologies, united by a shared mission to electrify the world while building a more sustainable energy future.
