HARVESTING WIND ENERGY IN AUSTRALIA

Welcome to Silverton, an historic silver-mining town and famed film location in Australia – the set of Mad Max and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert among others.

Very soon, wind energy will be the town’s next fortune. Hundreds of workers are already flocking to the area and taking their places centre-stage for a different kind of high-energy blockbuster.

THE SILVERTON WIND FARM

AGL Energy’s (AGL) 200MW Silverton Wind Farm has received approval from the NSW Planning Assessment Commission (PAC) as an early Christmas present on December 23, 2016, and final investment confirmation from AGL’s Powering Australian Renewables Fund (PARF) announced on January 19, 2017.

GE, in consortium with civil engineering construction company CATCON, has been awarded the construction of Silverton Wind Farm, featuring 58 GE's 3.4MW 130-metre-rotor wind turbines, sitting on 110-metre towers.

The GE turbines are robust, “temperature-tolerant machines”, with a standard-configuration temperature range of up to 45 degrees Celsius, which will enable them to operate in Silverton’s hot climes.

WHAT’S NEXT?

AGL’s PARF has a planned an investment of between AU$2 and AU$3 billion and a generation target of 1,000MW, or enough to power 400,000 Australian homes.
