COLD WEATHER SOLUTIONS
Weather conditions are unpredictable in any part of the world but it generally arrives in any combination of four forms, cold temperatures, sleet, snow and ice. Cold temperatures affect the viscosity of various lubrication systems used throughout the wind turbine as well as some electrical components, resulting in lower performance or turbine shut down.
As such, it’s critical to plan, prevent and maintain the efficiency of your wind turbines. With GE’s Cold Weather Solutions, you will always be prepared to confront the winter so you can keep energizing the world.

1. Cold Weather Retrofit
Keep your turbines’ components in operation during winter season
Our components have been designed with operating temperature range in mind, so they continue to operate during cold weather. Depending on the configuration some components have already the cold weather capabilities.
Through an inspection we can assess the current status of your components and advise you on what is needed in order to operate in down to cold weather temperatures up to -40 C.

2. Winter Iced Operation Mode Retrofit (WIOM)
Transfer from temporary to permanent cold weather capability
To prevent and ensure the efficiency of your turbines enable the Winter Iced Operation Mode.
Benefits
-
Enable extended operation under blade icing conditions.
-
WIOM helps to recover AEP losses when icing occurs on the blades by optimizing pitch controls to provide stall mitigation and avoid turbine overspeed events once ice is shed from the blade.
