Challenges

Accelerating energy transition

Responsible energy production across different power generating methods requires a commitment to constant innovation and transformation. Change is critical, but it is also hard.

AboitizPower’s latest efforts had to:
  • Deliver predictive maintenance strategies
  • Automate the collection of data
  • Make plant data available to a wider audience
  • Integrate key digital systems including Maximo

Solution

Employing predictive maintenance strategies

GE Vernova’s Asset Performance Management (APM) Health and Reliability went live at AboitizPower's Davao Therma South, Inc. (TSI) 2x150-MW (300 MW) Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) coal plant in July 2019. The technology covers 38 of the plant's most critical assets and records 939 instrumentation signals. More than 250 failure mode diagnostics and 24x7 monitoring have been activated. The data has changed how the organization operates. The team used technology to surface insights but also recognized that those insights must be acted upon.

Learning reliability centered maintenance (RCM)

A structured adoption program was instituted to educate key communities about how to leverage the new data for day-to-day decision making.

AboitizPower began with kick-off workshops and made training available. However, the team took it one step further than traditional classroom sessions. An online course was also created so that operators and engineers could truly absorb the information in the context of their work. The course allowed the team to understand APM and to explore the potential of the product independently. Continuous training has already paid off with solid adoption achieved and positive feedback received from the team.

Results

Delivering preventative maintenance

From Q3,2019 to Q2,2020, AboitizPower:
  • Detected 54 catches
  • Saved 96.34 power generation hours
With reliability centered maintenance in place the team has taken significant steps forward in their digital transformation and energy optimization strategies.
