The UK’s electricity grid is in a state of transition as Parliament has set the ambitious goal of cutting the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050. With much of its current nuclear fleet fast-approaching end-of-life, modern innovations like GEH’s BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR) promise to help the UK deliver on its net-carbon-zero promise and become energy independent.
In January 2024, UK regulators (in both England and Wales) initiated a two-step GDA for GEH’s BWRX-300 small modular reactor design following a readiness review of GEH’s application to the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero. The GDA helps ensure that a proposed reactor design can be constructed, operated, and decommissioned according to safety, security, and environmental protection standards required in the United Kingdom. GEH’s UK-based team is backed by ORLEN Synthos Green Energy, an investor and developer specializing in SMRs.
