Our Level-2 shops specialize in providing corrective maintenance for aeroderivative gas turbines, but with one distinction: We keep our repairs local for more convenient and faster service.

There are nine GE Vernova L-2 shops that service the Americas, APAC, and EMEA regions, all with standardized work scopes and capabilities to help ensure consistency.

Level-2 maintenance can be performed horizontally, both for installed and non-installed engines. This includes module exchanges and vane and blade replacement on rotating compressor blades.

All our shop work is conducted under consistent, controlled conditions to make sure that factors like temperature, humidity, and airflow have minimal impact on equipment, procedures and outcomes.

What is the difference between an L2 shop and an L4 shop, and what distinctive equipment does an L2 shop have?

Level-2 maintenance is conducted in the horizontal position either on-site or in our L2 facilities on the external to the package. This includes sensors, actuators, and thermocouples.

The scope of L2 repairs also includes corrective maintenance like modular exchanges, top cases, and hot sections. While many L2 scopes can be done onsite, the advantage of an L2 shop is that it is a maintenance facility with a controlled environment conducive to safe working conditions. High volume shops have dedicated shop leaders and OEM qualified tooling; in many cases, it is within easier reach of our local technicians and typically faster than our L4 shops.

Conversely, our L4 facilities are typically reserved for complete teardowns and major overhauls as well as component repairs. 

How long are the standard duration of repairs for L2 and L4 shops?

Repair durations are entirely dependent on scope. Typical timelines for L2 repairs range from a few days to a couple weeks, but each case varies. At GE Vernova, we determine the appropriate shop for your equipment based on repair needs. L4 scopes are usually more complex, leading to longer repair times. 

Can the Level-2 shops pick up some of the load from the L4 shops to speed up depot turn times?

It is our ambition to undertake more scope in our L2 facilities, thereby adding more value to the maintenance chain. However, our capabilities in doing so vary across locations. The U.S., for example, has an installed base that is five times that of Asia. Our team considers that it would be possible to upgrade our Asia shops and match up to 80% of the US shops’ capabilities to meet customer demand.

What Level-2 shop practices could be accomplished onsite as a temporary repair during an unexpected issue?

A site’s ability to operate in a similar capacity as an L2 shop is entirely dependent on its capabilities and facilities. As an example, if a site has an overhead crane with an enclosed climate-controlled space, there's more repairs that can be done locally compared that to a site with none of those types of facilities.

What's the normal turnover rate for an LM6000 routine service from the time it arrives at the shop to the time it's ready to ship back to a customer?

The L2 shops typically take between four and 12 days on average, depending on the work scope and how many work scopes. For example, we can perform a standard hot section repair in as little as four to six days depending on the engine model. If there are additional scopes, then turnaround time increases.

What is GE Vernova’s latest performance monitoring capabilities, and how does performance degrade over time?

Given the various environments and operating profiles, performance degradation analysis is a unit and site-specific calculation. Upon request, GE Vernova can perform the analysis to assist the customer in determining their specific aggregation over time. If there's an interest in performing an analysis, contact your CSL.

Does the shop follow the O&M manual for serviceable limits, or is there another standard?

The Level-2 shops follow the O&M manual, and our technicians are trained and qualified to these standards. All our evaluation and services are approved and authorized from our services engineering group.
