Overview

This state-of-the-art facility supplies over 1 gigawatt (GW) of electricity, sufficient to meet the needs of approximately 1 million South Korean households.

The challenge

South Korea's power generation sector has historically relied heavily on fossil fuels, particularly coal and oil, which account for nearly 60% of the country's energy needs. This dependency poses significant environmental challenges and risks to energy security. Tongyeong Eco Power sought a sustainable solution to provide reliable and efficient electricity while reducing carbon emissions.

The solution

To address these challenges, GE Vernova supplied the Tongyeong combined cycle power plant with cutting-edge equipment, including two 7HA.02 gas turbines, one STF-D600 steam turbine, two Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG), and three H65 generators. GE Vernova also committed to providing maintenance services for the 7HA.02 gas turbines and generators over the next 17 years. This comprehensive solution not only enhances plant efficiency but also supports South Korea's efforts to become energy self-reliant.

GE Vernova is committed to bringing more affordable, reliable, and sustainable power generation technology to South Korea. We are confident that the adoption of their advanced HA technology will play a significant role in moving the country towards becoming an energy self-reliant nation.

Tongyeong Eco Power

The shift from coal to liquefied natural gas (LNG) in South Korea is a critical step in the country's energy transition journey. GE Vernova's HA gas turbines, capable of operating on various fuel blends, including hydrogen and natural gas, offer multiple pathways to reducing CO2 emissions.

The Tongyeong project is part of a broader initiative that includes other significant projects like Naepo Green Energy Co. Ltd.'s district heating plant and Korea Southern Power Co. Ltd.'s Shinsejong combined-cycle power plant, both powered by GE Vernova's high-efficiency gas turbines. For over 45 years, GE Vernova has partnered with Korean companies to support the nation's infrastructure needs, providing over 14 GW of generation capacity through its installed base of more than 80 units.
