First 6B repowering gas turbine Upgrade for RIL in India
GE Vernova’s Gas Power team provided a 6B Advanced Gas Path (AGP) upgrade for Reliance Industries Ltd in India to update the aging gas turbine to the latest technologies.
Overview
India’s Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) operates the world’s largest oil refinery at DTA Jamnagar in Gujarat. The plant’s thirteen 6B gas turbines were coming up on 40 years of operation and required an upgrade to improve gas turbine performance.
The 6B AGP upgrade resulted in a modernized gas turbine that is more flexible and uses less fuel—all while maintaining the 6B gas turbine’s renowned reliability and fuel flexibility.
Outcomes
The 6B upgrade was carried out during the major inspection of DTA GT 4. As a result, the unit increased output by ~11% in open-cycle operation and saw a heat rate improvement of 4.2%.
We worked very closely with Gas Power from the beginning of the project, taking a very focused approach. As a result, the GE Vernova team was able to have all the necessary parts in just one week, which was an incredible accomplishment. And we couldn’t be happier with the upgraded gas turbine’s performance.

Previously, Gas Power provided the “Single nozzle Syngas retrofit with water injection” of nine 6B units—a first-of-its-kind retrofit that helped the plant operator run the gas turbines on syngas, translating into significant fuel cost savings.
In India, GE has an installed base of more than 70 6B gas turbines that are currently under operation at various locations.
