Overview

PTTGC is expecting to see a return on investment within just 3 years—much faster than originally anticipated.

The challenge

PTTGC was seeking ways to save energy and reduce emissions at their utility plant. With six 6B gas turbines and two Frame 5 units covered under a long-term service agreement with GE Vernova until 2032, they needed a solution to increase performance, improve heat rates, and lower fuel consumption without compromising output.

The solution

GE Vernova proposed an upgrade to the Advanced Gas Path (AGP) technology on two of PTTGC's 6B gas turbine units. This upgrade was designed to enhance the overall performance of the gas turbines by improving heat rate, increasing power output, and reducing fuel consumption, all while maintaining operational reliability.

Recently, PTTGC ordered AGP Advanced Gas Path technology from GE and installed in our 6B unit in Feb 2024. Heat rate improvement and power increment after installation of the AGP is beyond the expectation. This rejuvenation of heat rate and power seems to be like the new gas turbine performance but without replacing the entire machine, only changing the 9 major components in the turbine section.

The installation of the AGP upgrade significantly improved the plant's energy efficiency. The heat rate of the upgraded gas turbines improved by 3.3%, surpassing the initial expectation of 2.3%. In addition, the AGP upgrade contributes to lower emissions due to reduced fuel consumption, aligning with PTTGC's goals for sustainability and environmental responsibility.

PTTGC’s utility plant in the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate is a key industrial facility in Thailand. By adopting GE Vernova’s AGP technology, they not only enhanced their operational efficiency but also took significant steps toward reducing their environmental impact. The long-term service agreement (CSA) with GE, covering multiple gas turbine units until 2032, underscores their commitment to maintaining peak operational performance and sustainability through ongoing collaboration with GE Vernova.
