Let me take you on a quick tour of my favorite people and places, and you’ll see why!
Local presence
Let me start with the big picture: We have a strong local presence in Vietnam. There are 1,800 GE employees in Vietnam who are working hard every day to serve our customers in the country and around the world, develop and train our local staff, and support the country’s economy.
Vietnam has an installed power generation capacity of about 55 GW, and GE provides up to 27% of the country’s electricity needs. GE currently has a fleet of more than 25 gas turbines and 7 steam turbines across 11 power plants and other projects throughout Vietnam. All these projects are helping support Vietnam’s rapidly growing economy. In fact, Vietnam is expected to retain its status as the fastest-growing economies in Southeast Asia, despite the impact of Covid 19.
GE is committed to supporting the region’s future generation mix and energy needs for reliable and flexible power, particularly with our HA technology. Today our power generation solutions are not only focused on gas turbines, but also on plantwide solutions including steam turbines, generators and HRSGs.
Now let’s take a closer look at our GE manufacturing facilities in Vietnam—Phu My and Dung Quat— and explore what makes them special.
Phy My gas turbine reconditioning workshop
A joint venture between GE and Power Generation Corporation 3 (EVN GENCO3), Phu My is the only gas turbine component repair workshop in Vietnam. The site is managed and operated by GE, and houses about 80 employees—all of whom are Vietnamese and support the local economy by locally sourcing up to 20% of the facility’s direct input materials. This GE investment of more than $20 million helps many large thermal power plants in Vietnam including the Phu My power plant, the Nhon Track power plant and other EVN power plants, as well as international customers.
Aside from generating power in Vietnam, what really makes Phu My special? I couldn’t say it any better than Cong Nguyen Dinh, one of the facility’s dedicated engineers:
“Our work is not simple at all! We are not only normal engineers, we are ‘technical doctors!’ Our patients are turbine parts of many different gas turbine models that are damaged or need maintenance. Mild cases take about 20 days, but severe “illnesses” can take 3-4 months for treatment.”
What also sets Phu My apart in the industry is its dedication to continuous innovation. In addition to repair parts, the team also actively looks for new product opportunities to enhance the facility’s repair capabilities and expand its product portfolio. Within 6-8 months, its team of 5 engineers, along with the production department, can complete the production process for 5-6 new products.

Dung Quat HRSG facility
The Dung Quat Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG) facility is one of only two GE HRSG factories in the world. It became a GE facility with the 2017 acquisition of Doosan Engineering & Construction’s HRSG business and houses more than 300 skilled workers and 200 contractors who manufacture and supply HRSG parts for 9HA.02 projects throughout ASEAN.
Every day the Dung Quat team’s work is helping global customers boost power output while increasing domestic value by locally sourcing up to 50% of the facility’s direct input materials. Today, the plant is committed to increasing capacity by 40% and reducing cycle time by 25%. The facility is not only contributing to Vietnam’s power generation, but also working to support and develop local talent through partnerships with universities that provide education and training.
For Khoa Nguyen, LEAN manager, the Dung Quat facility is unique not only because it’s one of only two of its kind in the world, but because of its focus on innovative ways to improve the facility’s efficiency and output. Khoa reports that he starts every day by “walking around the plant using my ‘hunting tool’ to observe the way everything operates, observe any waste in our processes and think of new, innovative ideas.”
Khoa is also a member of the facility’s LEAN innovation think tank, a group that meets regularly to develop improvements to the facility’s operations. So far the Moonshine Shop has initiated more than 100 innovative ideas that are helping the Dung Quat facility operate more efficiently, with a 40% increase in profitability and a 25% reduction in production cycle time.
To me, the greatest achievement is that my work contributes to improving value for my colleagues and overall plant operations. “I am very proud to be with GE and contributing to improving the efficiency of power plants around the world.”
