Reliable electric supply is a critical need. In the industrial arena, costs due to electrical power loss and process interruption can be quantified into hard dollars. Generation may be available to supply the needs of the plant if islanded; at other times and conditions, a sizable portion of plant load must be shed in order for the load to match the available generation. In all cases, our goal is to help our customers maintain continuation of plant processes during an external disturbance or island condition to minimize environmental impact, production loss, and potential equipment damage. We develop design and implementation details for control systems that detect islanded conditions in industrial facilities, create an island if needed, and execute a multi-tier fast load shed to match load-generation balance.
