Overview

Throughout Southeast Asia, the goal is to increase the share of renewable energy sources in the electricity generation mix. But how to accomplish that economically and reliably?

The challenge

The ASEAN Centre for Energy is a consortium with member countries throughout Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Thailand, Lao PDR, Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, Cambodia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Brunei Darussalam). ASEAN’s goal is to increase the amount of renewable energy from 38% in 2021 to 44% in 2025, while reducing the use of coal and natural gas.

The solution

Focusing on ways to better balance the energy load between countries, Consulting Services studied and modelled interconnections between each country’s grid to help determine how greater interconnections could allow a higher penetration of renewable energy sources in the region—particularly solar and wind.

Outcomes

Enabling renewable energy throughout the region

"

Based on the findings of Consulting Services ASEAN Interconnection Masterplan Study, ASEAN countries will be able to set out the transmission infrastructure needed and required investment to support multilateral power trade in ASEAN and renewable energy integration into the ASEAN Power Grid throughout Southeast Asia region.

As part of their study, the Consulting Services team was also able to leverage the diversity of time zones across Southeast Asia, as well as weather patterns, to provide recommendations for balancing energy generation. This shift in the energy transmission approach could help countries throughout Asia become less dependent on fossil fuels by sourcing more efficient energy sources and reducing the inherent risks of importing gas and coal.
