BWRX-300: Our advanced small modular reactor (SMR)
Powered by commercially available fuel, the BWRX-300 features an innovative and simplified configuration, resulting in less concrete and steel needed for construction. The BWRX-300 is a cost-competitive solution that can be deployed for electricity generation and industrial applications, including hydrogen production, desalination, and district heating. It features significantly less capital cost per MW when compared with a typical water-cooled SMR, and using a combination of modular and open-top construction techniques, the BWRX-300 can be constructed in 24-36 months while achieving a volume reduction in plant layout.

1939
First GE involvement in nuclear physics
Following the discovery of nuclear fission in Europe, GE begins investigating the practicality of using nuclear energy to supply consumer electricity.
1955
GE Atomic Division established
The Atomic Energy Act of 1954 increased support for a civilian nuclear industry. GE created its nuclear (atomic) energy division to develop the technologies that would help bring nuclear energy to the masses.

Vallecitos BWR AEC License #1
Located about 30 miles east of San Francisco, CA, this experimental reactor delivered 40K MW hours of electricity to the local utility grid from 1957 to 1963.
1962
NPD achieves full power—first reactor in Canada
The 20 MW deuterium uranium reactor realized unique on-power refueling concepts: using natural uranium fuel and a heavy water moderator and coolant.
1974
25th BWR—Peach Bottom Unit 3
Located about 50 miles southeast of Harrisburg, PA, this plant puts out 1,382 MW following an approved uprate in 2018.
1986
50th BWR—River Bend Nuclear Generating Station
Located about 30 miles north of Baton Rouge, LA, this plant puts out about 974 MW following an approved uprate in 2003.
1996
1st Gen III reactor (ABWR) built on-time on-budget
Built in Japan, this featured modular construction and can meet power generation needs ranging from 1,350 to 1,460 MW net.
2014
ESBWR U.S. NRC License
The Economic Simplified Boiling-Water Reactor was built with 25% fewer pumps and mechanical drives than existing active safety plants to generate as much as 1,520 MW.
2017
BWRX-300 launched
When wind, solar, or hydro aren’t available, the BWRX-300 is a highly available power source for those concerned about energy security.
2020
Natrium™ launched
A key enabler of wind and solar technologies, Natrium was jointly developed with TerraPower, and stores more energy than typical battery facilities to use when the wind isn’t blowing or the sun isn’t shining.
2022
First commercial contract for BWRX-300
Under this contract’s terms, the Darlington New Nuclear Project site in Clarington, Ontario, Canada, will be the first site in the world to deploy the next generation SMR.
2023
TVA, OPG, and SGE invest in BWRX-300 common design
Three international power companies in the US, Canada, and Poland agree to invest in developing the next generation modular reactor for their respective countries.
2024
BWRX-300 completes Step 1 of UK’S GDA process
The BWRX-300 successfully completes Step 1 of the UK’s Generic Design Assessment (GDA) process, advancing the technology’s prospects in the UK and other international markets.
2025
Darlington site receives full approval for BWRX-300 construction
Deployment of four BWRX-300s at the Darlington site receives final approval from Province of Ontario and Ontario Power Generation and full-scale construction of the first unit begins.
